Alright, so over the years we’ve talked about a lot of different strategies to really take advantage and maximize your practice time right…
We all only have 24 hours in the day.
So, when we can find ways to shortcut our learning and really take advantage of the limited time we have at the piano, it’s always a good thing to find those practice gems.
Now that being said, one thing that we haven’t spent a ton of time talking about is transposition and how to practice in all 12 keys.
And this is something that I’ve done a lot of over the years and it really has been a game changer for my music and my music career.
1 Practice Technique That’s Been A Game Changer
I can think of plenty of situations where, really I’ve gotten the gig because I can instantly take something into a new key.
I’ve gotten church gigs. Because you know, a lot of times you play at church and someone will just start singing outta anywhere right.
So, not only do you need to know the chord progression but you never know what key they are going to be in.
You have to just be able to hear it, listen and immediately be able to play it and then BOOM.
Because you know the chord progression you can just do it in whatever key they’re in…
I’ve been on tour before and let’s just say some singers have a habit of spending a little too much time enjoying the good life.
And they’ll come back on the next gig and their voice is really hoarse. And all of a sudden that high C that they can normally hit, they can’t do it anymore.
It’s now at an Ab and you have to be able to adjust instantly right then and there on stage.
So that’s a very good thing to be able to do…
Also when we’re learning jazz piano and really other styles of music as well, it’s really important that we start seeing patterns.
Great music is about patterns.
There’s 2 5 1s and common licks and common vocabulary we’ll find in tons of different tunes. So, the ability to be able to transpose and take things into multiple keys instantly is just a great skill to have.
Now a lot of musicians will talk about this and they’ll say you know, “you should just practice everything in all 12 keys…”
This is great and all but, how do we do that though right?
Like, how do we get this down?
Is there a formula?
Is there a shortcut? Well…
