Christmas Songs For Piano – How Maya Angelou Inspired Me
When you play piano as much as I do, you have to do lots of weird things to stay musically inspired.
Sometimes I’ll spend the day listening to Oscar Peterson albums, practice christmas songs for piano, or I’ll learn a new Herbie Hancock chord.
Sometimes I’ll just analyze a great composition, or I’ll step away from the piano and meditate.
Heck, even sipping some whiskey a couple times a year can give me some new ideas. 🙂
Every once in awhile I’ll even listen to a Justin Bieber song and then do the exact opposite of every musical decision he made. (This always works really well!)
Now normally I wouldn’t list ‘standing in line at the post office’ as an activity I do to get musically inspired.
But, my trip to the post office yesterday changed everything.
The walls at the post office by my office are super boring.
There filled with lists of regulations, pricing sheets, postal codes, etc. etc.
All printed in black and white.
The type of stuff nobody reads.
And if you did it would put you right to sleep.
But apparently the ‘interior designers’ at the post office recently decided the place needed a little decoration.
So, right between the sludge of black and white regulations was a brand new sky blue poster.
On it was an amazing quote from Maya Angelou, the legendary author.
“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
-Maya Angela
Yes, yes, and yes again! Post office inspiration!
It’s a beautiful reminder to those of us who so caught up in the technical details of learning piano that we forget what started us on this path to begin with.
On the purest level we all have a ‘song in our heart’. That’s what drew us to the piano in the first place.
The more we grow as musicians, the more we can unlock that ’song in our heart’.
Never forget that as you continue on your life long musical journey.
And if you need some help getting that song out of your heart this holiday season, I’ve created a course that will help you do just that.
There’s a formula to playing amazing jazz and christmas songs for the piano and I teach it here —> https://www.freejazzlessons.com/christmas
Sometimes beauty comes from the bland…or in this case the post office.
